TRILOBE X-Nihilo: The Untold Story of a New Manufactory Movement Born in Paris

The center of a clock does not necessarily have to be "hands."

TRILOBE is an independent watch brand from Paris that has quietly overturned this common notion. While conventional watches use moving hands to indicate time, TRILOBE employs a unique display method that moves three rings, with fixed indices for reading hours, minutes, and seconds.

Instead of chasing time, time itself moves.

Born to support this poetic and architectural concept more deeply and in a manner true to TRILOBE, "X-Nihilo" is the brand's first fully in-house manufactured movement.

A movement named "creation from nothing"

The name X-Nihilo comes from the Latin "Ex Nihilo," meaning "creation from nothing."

This name is not merely ornamental. It signifies TRILOBE's intention to build its time expression from the ground up, in line with its own philosophy, rather than adapting to existing mechanisms.

X-Nihilo is TRILOBE's first in-house manufactured movement, with conception, design, development, prototyping, machining, decoration, and assembly all performed internally. According to TRILOBE's official statement, X-Nihilo will be featured in all models of the Trente-Deux collection.

It's more than just "having an in-house movement."

For TRILOBE, X-Nihilo is both the internal mechanism of the watch and the embodiment of the brand's very philosophy.

Why TRILOBE manufactures movements in Paris, France

In the world of luxury watches, the term "Swiss-made" carries significant weight. Many brands have created precise timepieces by collaborating with Swiss specialist manufacturers and suppliers.

Amidst this, TRILOBE deliberately chose to establish its own atelier in Paris.

According to TRILOBE's official statement, the Paris workspace offers views of the Opéra Garnier dome and the Vendôme Column. New collections are born through the close collaboration of the product team, mechanical engineers, prototyping, and watchmaking teams.

This "proximity" is key to the birth of X-Nihilo.

Designers, mechanical engineers, prototypers, and watchmakers who assemble the pieces all converse in the same environment. Will the beauty on paper translate into a functional component? Will the mechanism operate correctly? Will the finished product retain TRILOBE's characteristic poetic touch?

The ability to repeatedly and closely address these questions is the strength of the Parisian manufacture.

International media such as Time+Tide also highlight that the greatest value brought by TRILOBE's new manufacture is not just quality control or supply chain, but the "proximity" that allows designers, engineers, watchmakers, and component manufacturing teams to constantly interact in the same environment.

The unique view created by the open island structure

The distinctive structure of X-Nihilo is also evident in its bold caseback view.

TRILOBE's official description states that this movement's architecture is built around an open, island-like structure that highlights the isolated, enlarged balance wheel. It also features a 42-hour power reserve, blending technical precision with a unique aesthetic.

In typical automatic movements, the rotor often obscures much of the mechanism. However, the X-Nihilo employs an open-worked tungsten rotor, designed to showcase the depth of the mechanism and the presence of the balance wheel.

When you turn the watch over, what you see is not merely a machine.

Negative space, three-dimensionality, light reflection, bridge finishing, overlapping gears—the movement itself tells TRILOBE's story, as if one were gazing at a miniature architectural masterpiece.

What is embodied in the "Paris–France" engraving

The bridges of the X-Nihilo bear the engraving "Paris–France."

This is more than just an indication of origin. TRILOBE's official statement explains that the typography of this engraving is inspired by vintage Parisian street signs. Additionally, a distinctive feature is the movement's appearance of floating in mid-air when viewed through the sapphire caseback.

This engraving signifies TRILOBE's origins and its commitment to deepening its watchmaking roots.

While respecting Swiss watchmaking, TRILOBE imbues its watches with Parisian aesthetics, architecture, art, and literary sensibilities. The X-Nihilo is a caliber that expresses this intention in the most fundamental part of the watch: the movement itself.

The invisible story of 400 hours of quality control

A beautiful movement. An original display. Made in Paris.

These alone make X-Nihilo sufficiently attractive. However, there is another important element in the story of this movement.

That is approximately 400 hours of quality control.

TRILOBE's official statement explains that the movement is assembled in-house by approximately 10 skilled watchmakers and undergoes strict quality control from three aspects—regularity and performance, water resistance, and aesthetics—after assembly and casing. Furthermore, a total of 400 hours of inspection is conducted to confirm accuracy and reliability, including 72 hours of dynamic testing using a wearing simulator.

These 400 hours are not a flashy number.

Rather, it's the time quietly accumulated after the watch is completed. Will it run stably on the wrist? Can it withstand daily use? Are its accuracy and reliability maintained? Is the exterior finish flawless?

Behind the visible beauty, invisible checks are performed repeatedly. This reflects TRILOBE's commitment as an independent brand to serious watchmaking.

Trente-Deux: A New Stage

The Trente-Deux, featuring the X-Nihilo, represents a new chapter for TRILOBE.

The Trente-Deux combines TRILOBE's characteristic off-center time display with an integrated bracelet and a sporty case design. International media such as HODINKEE and MONOCHROME have highlighted the Trente-Deux as a significant work, featuring the brand's first integrated bracelet and first in-house movement.

And in 2026, the Trente-Deux Secret Edition was also launched at Watches & Wonders.

The Secret Edition expands the Trente-Deux world with TRILOBE's poetic expression of depicting a star map on the dial based on a chosen date, time, and location. Revolution Watch describes the Trente-Deux Secret Edition as a personal creation that encapsulates a chosen moment as a star map.

Here, too, the X-Nihilo is not merely a power source.

It is the invisible heart that supports the memory of stars, rotating time, and the machine made in Paris.

X-Nihilo: Indicating TRILOBE's Future

The advent of X-Nihilo marks a significant turning point for TRILOBE.

TRILOBE has always been a brand that challenges conventional time display. However, with X-Nihilo, TRILOBE has evolved into a brand that manufactures the very mechanism supporting its unique display itself.

The challenge, which began with the elimination of hands, has progressed to establishing an atelier in Paris, designing components, assembling movements, and completing a single watch after 400 hours of inspection.

X-Nihilo is not just a movement that proves TRILOBE is a brand that makes "different watches," but it also proves "why it needs to be different" deep within the mechanism itself.

Time flows on.

TRILOBE's aspirations remain unchanged.
X-Nihilo is a new heart born in Paris, reflecting the brand's current position.
